Located in the westernmost coast of the island of Menorca, in the Mediterranean Sea, Ciutadella is an attractive, medieval Mediterranean town with a picturesque port and an engaging old quarter. Once sleepy town Ciutadella is becoming more and more popular destination for holidays, particularly for those who wish to experience authentic Spanish culture on their holidays in Menorca. The old centre of the town has many renaissance period buildings and the decorative cathedral dates back to the 14th century.

What to visit

The historic quarter of this city surrounded by medieval cobbled streets lined with grand palaces, wonderful churches such as Sant Francesc, from the 13th century, baroque and gothic architecture, pavement cafes, noble houses, small squares and majestic fortresses is worth a visit.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Ciutadella is the construction of Catalan Gothic style built between the XIII and XIV centuries. The cathedral is located in a very touristic and crowded zone, right next to the shopping street of Ses Voltes.

Ses Voltes Street is the main road of the old Ciutadella quarters where you can find a lot of shops, pastry shops and restaurants of all kinds.

In this area of the city you can also visit beautiful manor houses and Es Born square, which houses the city council; an old royal palace built on a Muslim castle, the Teatre des Born; an Obelisk of 22 meters Height, the Torresaura Palace, the Palace Salort and a viewpoint located on the walls of the XVII century.

In the streets leading down from the Plaza de Es Born and Can Faustino, you can find also restaurants of all kinds and many shops and stalls where you can buy precious handicrafts and products typically Menorcan.

Another place that the visitor should not miss is the Mercat des Peix (Fish Market), where you can buy meat and fish or seafood of excellent quality.

Outside the walled area, you should visit places like the Santuari of Mary Help of Christians, the Fortress of La Mola, the Castle of Sant Nicolau or the Fort of Marlboroug, built by the British between 1710 and 1726.

A must-see is also the beautiful port of Ciutadella, whose entrance presides over the old lighthouse of Sa Farola. From Sa Farola, the promenade leads to Cala in Blanes and Cala En Brut.

In this port area, you can find numerous bars and restaurants where you can taste fresh fish, a stew of seafood, a typical plate of the island, or rich paella. You can also eat tapas and other specialities of Menorca cuisine like potatoes with mahonesa sauce (originally from Mahon, another town in the island).

A beautiful panoramic view of the port, which is located in a cove at the foot of the city, can be seen from the “mirador” (viewing point), behind the City Hall.

Cala des Degollador, also known as Sa Platja Gran, is one of Ciutadella‘s urban beaches and is situated just 10 minutes away from the Plaza del Borne, between the Port and Punta des Gegant and flanked by the Castell de Sant Nicolau.

Castell de Sant Nicolau is a defense watchtower built by the Spanish in the late eighteenth century. Inside the tower there is a spiral staircase to access the top of the tower with exceptional views of the harbour and city.

Near Ciutadella and accessible by car or bicycle, you can visit Cala Morell cove with the wonderful view of white buildings on the cliff which can be observed from a calm and quitet beach nicely or from the virgin beaches of Algaiarens (also known as La Vall or La Vall d’Algaiarens).

Platja de Son Xoriguer is situated 12 kilometres from Ciutadella, located between Punta de sa Guarda and Titina.

This sea inlet is characterized by the shape of a shell, the beach is sandy and part of the beach is covered by rocks. The water is quiet, the slope is gentle, there are some emerging reefs next to the beach. It has a sandy ground with seaweed, and it is very crowded by local visitors and tourists, and lots of families.

Situated just 7km from Ciutadella Castillo Menorca is a shopping and entertainment park for all the family. There are numerous shops selling island souvenirs including the islands biggest LLADRO showroom as well as numerous activities for children including large grassed gardens, trampolines, mini golf, sand pits, climbing wall, swimming pools and water chutes.

The festival of Saint John is celebrated here every year on 24th and 25th of June. This is what the town is most famous for. Festival of Saint John is now not only local to this place instead it’s being celebrated and known all over Spain now.

The riders ride the horse in the city in between the crowd. The horses rear up on two of their hind legs and the people in the crowd try to touch the belly of these horses. The festival is an important one in the town and attracts a big crowd from everywhere.

Sightseeing in Ciutadella does not have to be limited to land. Especially during the summer, the port is packed with yachts and the beach is alive with various water sports activities. There are various services such as Planoram and Magic Boat Menorca that take visitors on a boat excursion along the west and south coast of Menorca. The adventurous side of the town is its water-sports activities like high-speed motorboats, windsurfing, sailing. Kayaks ride are also available in Single/Double options.
